It's the operating system, not the kernel, that is important to RMS & GNU.

  s/rename/refer to/

It's not "renaming Linux" (as in the kernel). It's referring to the
distribution of the Linux kernel, and the *greater GNU operating system and
toolkit* as GNU/Linux. Why? Because that's exactly what it is.

You'll note that I don't actually say "GNU/Linux", but I agree with the
man's sentiment. RMS will continue to ask, because that's his way. Thus,
there are two things you should do:

  1. Find an alternative way to recognise the GNU Project and embrace it.

  2. Email Richard, and say that whilst you probably won't refer to your
operating system as "GNU/Linux" every day, you are keen to promote the GNU
Project's excellent work by doing 1. Talk to him, and see what he says.

I did. I found him kind, considerate, encouraging, and quite welcoming.
He's not the boogey man out to vandalise our favourite kernel for his own
nefarious cause. He's an "arsehole for freedom".

Yet another hacker who I deeply respect and admire - if not for his social
graces, but his dedication.
