Sorry I can't help you much - perhaps X needs to be started as another user
(ie not root).

su thingy -c "startx" or something.

BTW there is this lovely ad in Sysadmin magazine with this guy in a
straightjacket saying he got his own X server going on his laptop (they want
you to buy their pre-made X tools).
