I don't think it was either, but couldn't resist stirring. It was more
likely incompatibilities between two adaptec controllers and the low
level formats. Another likely factor was the IBM hard disks squabbling
(they are fussy about spinning up more than two at the one time -it was
fun when I first installed them until I twigged to this). But this time
installing Debian didn't fix the problem {;-), so I re-installed RH7 and
worked on that. The solution actually involved replacing one of the
adaptecs with a Tekram controller (it only has to run the CD and tape
drive).
