[activities] Fwd: Technology Trends Seminar, Monday August 13, 5:30-6:30, The latest Innovationin "X-Ray Vision" (Millimeter Wave Imaging)

Hello Everyone,

I would like to draw your attention to CSIRO's monthly technology talks
which are free, highly informative and usually of very high calibre.

***Next one is Monday 13 August 07***

Hope it's of interest to some of you.
All the best.

Abstract:

The ability to see through peoples clothes has been a preoccupation with a number of scientists over the last decade.  In recent years a safe technology to achieve this has been developed and is now being trialled.  The technology is based on imaging at frequencies hundreds of times that of mobile phones: millimetre-wave frequencies.  Imaging technologies at millimetre-wave and sub-millimetre wave frequencies have the potential to enable a vast range of new applications in the security, medical, and non-destructive testing industries.  This talk will introduce the area, what technologies are being brought into operation, and cover research being undertaken by the CSIRO ICT Centre towards applications of this technology.

Bio:

Dr Andrew Hellicar received a B. E. and Ph. D in electronic and computer systems engineering from the University of Tasmania andMonash University respectively.  He joined the CSIRO Information and Communication Technologies Centre in Sydney, Australia in 2003 as a research scientist where he investigated the application of methods in distributed computing applied to solving problems in computational electromagnetics.  Since 2006 he has been leading a dynamic and eclectic team of research scientists in the field of millimetre-wave and terahertz imaging. He has overseen the design and implementation of a terahertz imaging system, and the acquisition of images of people at mm-wave frequencies.  Beyond his role in research management, Dr Hellicar maintains interests in the area of computational electromagnetics specifically in the area of boundary element and finite element methods and distributed computing.
